Popular Stellenbosch Sunday Market makes a big return

One of Stellenbosch’s most-loved community markets is officially making a comeback after more than a year off the streets.

After months of uncertainty, the Dorp Street Sunday Market has confirmed it will reopen on Sunday, 25 January 2026, bringing life back to the oak-lined sidewalks of Dorp Street for the first time in 18 months.

The news was shared on Christmas Day, with organisers calling it a return driven by community support and a renewed sense of purpose.

“This market has always been about community, connections and supporting local businesses,” the team said, according to Getaway.

“We just can’t wait to bring this feeling back to Stellenbosch.” they added.

Since launching in October 2020, the market quickly became a Sunday favourite for locals, offering a relaxed space to shop, eat and connect.

In March 2025, the market was forced to close following months of red tape and delayed approvals. Its closure sparked widespread support from vendors, visitors and neighbours, alongside renewed engagement with the Stellenbosch Municipality, including backing from Mayor Jeremy Fasser.

Visitors can expect a curated mix of local stalls offering:

  • Handmade crafts and local design
  • Vintage finds and collectables
  • Home décor and unique gifts
  • Food and drinks from Stellenbosch cafés and restaurants
