A section of Muizenberg’s iconic Surfer’s Corner has been temporarily closed to the public.
From Saturday, 4 October 2025, construction crews moved in to start installing a new dewatering system near the railway line, the first step in a full upgrade of the beachfront’s ageing sea defences and promenade.
The closure affects only the area closest to the railway line, while the main Muizenberg Beach remains open. Swimmers, surfers, and beachgoers can still enjoy the water as work progresses.
Major upgrade for Surfer’s Corner
The City’s Coastal Management Branch is leading the project, focusing first on replacing the outdated seawalls and concrete barriers that have protected the area for decades. These will be replaced with a new stepped revetment system, a modern design built to handle stronger storm surges and rising sea levels.
A new three-metre-wide promenade and universally accessible beach ramp are also being built, creating easier access for families, people with disabilities, and visitors with strollers.
To maintain Muizenberg’s signature look, the new concrete structures will feature a sandblasted sandstone finish, blending with the beach’s natural surroundings.
While some construction zones are fenced off, the City says disruption will be kept to a minimum. Once complete, the area will also see:
- Upgraded parking along the railway line and Pavilion
- New ablution facilities with family-friendly and accessible features
- A reimagined children’s playground themed around local marine life
- Local mosaic artworks celebrating Muizenberg’s surf and heritage culture
- The historic pergola will also be rebuilt slightly inland for better protection
The first phase of work began in February 2025 and is expected to reopen in December, just in time for the busy festive season. The full project is scheduled for completion close to the end of 2026.
