Popular KCL sports night venue to introduce stricter rules amid overcrowding concerns

A popular King’s College London (KCL) sports night venue is set to introduce stricter measures amid overcrowding concerns.

Starting this Wednesday 22nd October, Dover Castle, located on Great Dover Street, will have an earlier last entry time of 12 am on Wednesdays. A policy of no drinks in the outside area, unless a customer is leaving the venue, will also be implemented.

In an Instagram post, the pub shared how, due to an increasing number of groups “congregating in the adjacent areas surrounding the pub” these new measures are being put in place to “ensure the safety of our staff, our customers, and importantly, the public.”

The new rules also include large groups requiring advanced bookings “as early as possible” so the pub can manage its capacity according to its licence.

However, the venue will remain open until its usual closing time of 2am.

In the post, the pub also emphasised that when it reaches capacity, additional visitors will not be allowed to enter or “linger outside”.

It urged students to comply with the new rules and not to “attempt to enter or congregate outside”, especially if arriving after 12am. This is said to avoid unwanted outcomes such as “the pub closing early or even the police being called to disperse the crowds lingering outside.”

Dover Castle told The King’s Tab: “Nothing has really changed at Dover bar apart from those three hours on a Wednesday where we just literally cannot have 400 to 500 people on the street for many reasons.”

“So we can still take large bookings if they book early but are just trying to stop big crowds hanging around.”
