Parts of Cape Town will be affected by a 10-hour water outage

The City of Cape Town has confirmed that parts of Wynberg will experience a planned water outage on Wednesday, 5 November, from 8:00 to 18:00. The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply to connect a newly installed pipeline along Cogill and Egglestone Roads to the existing water network.

According to the City, “This critical maintenance work is done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers.”

The affected streets include Cogill Road, Egglestone Road, Benjamin Road, and Wellington Road, as well as possibly the surrounding areas in Wynberg.

The city stated that the scheduled maintenance aims to enhance the system’s reliability and ensure long-term efficiency. However, it warned that unforeseen technical issues may extend the work beyond the planned timeframe.

Residents urged to prepare in advance, before the water outage

Residents have been urged to make necessary preparations ahead of the water outage. The city encouraged them to store enough water in clean, sealed containers as a precautionary measure.

“This precaution does not guarantee all residents will have a water disruption, but it aims to ensure they can prepare in the event it does occur,” the city explained.

Officials emphasised that careful planning was done to schedule the work at a time expected to cause the least disruption. However, residents are reminded that once the water supply is restored, the water may appear discoloured or milky due to trapped air in the pipes. This temporary condition clears up after standing for a few minutes.

Safety and updates during maintenance

All work areas will be treated as construction zones and are strictly off-limits to the public for safety reasons. The city also advised residents to keep taps closed during the shutdown to avoid water loss when the system is re-pressurised.
