Parts of Cape Town to face a nine-hour water shutdown

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off the water supply in parts of Philippi on Tuesday, 14 October, from 9:00 until 18:00. The planned nine-hour outage will allow teams to connect the area’s main water supply to new infrastructure.

“The maintenance work is part of ongoing efforts to improve the reliability and quality of water services to residents,” the City said.

“Careful consideration has been given in the planning of this work to minimise the disruption.”

Affected areas include Gcobani Street, between Sheffield and Nqilo Streets, and the immediate surrounds in Philippi. During this time, residents are advised to store sufficient water in clean, sealed containers.

Cape Town residents urged to prepare ahead of the shutdown

The city has urged residents to take precautionary steps before the water supply is temporarily halted.

“Residents are encouraged to store enough water in advance as a precautionary measure,” the city added.

“This precaution does not guarantee that all residents will experience a disruption, but it ensures they can prepare in the event it occurs.”

Residents are also reminded to keep taps closed to prevent water loss or possible damage when supply is restored.

After the maintenance is completed, the water may appear slightly discoloured or milky due to trapped air in the pipes. The City reassured residents that this is harmless and that the water will clear up if left to stand.

City apologises for inconvenience

The city said it sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused by the temporary shutdown.

“Sometimes maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means it could take longer,” the city noted.

“However, the work is critical to ensure a stable water supply in the future.”
