Parliament says it is concerned about the safety of its members amid reports of threats.
Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said some members have reported the threats at their respective police stations, which Parliament hopes will result in an investigation.
“Parliament relies on the security services for the assessment of threats and criminal investigations.
Where necessary, the Secretary to Parliament will engage the National Commissioner for updates and to ensure that these matters receive appropriate attention,” Mothapo said on Tuesday.
Mothapo urged the public to protect MPs “by supporting and safeguarding the democratic processes of our country.”
MKP MEMBER KIDNAPPED, THREATENED
Meanwhile, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s member and the party’s alternate member of the ad hoc committee investigating corruption allegations in SAPS, Vusi Shongwe, was kidnapped, hijacked and extorted on Wednesday.
In a letter to Parliament, party chief whip Colleen Makhubele said Shongwe was with another person during the incident. She said the assailants made off with Shongwe’s three cellphones and forced him to pay a “substantial sum of money”.
Makhubele said the alleged attack highlighted an urgent need to protect MPs.
“This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all members of the ad-hoc committee.
Any further delays or failure to these threats not only endangers our members but also exposes Parliament to potential legal and financial consequences,” said Makhubele.
Shongwe reported the incident at the Tembisa police station.
The matter is under investigation.
