- Over 2 300 sexual offenders were arrested across South Africa in September 2025, with 46 sentenced to life imprisonment.
- The Western Cape recorded the highest number of arrests, followed by Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
- Police say these convictions mark major progress in the ongoing fight against gender-based violence and sexual offences.
At least 2 320 sexual offenders were arrested, and 46 of them were sentenced to life imprisonment in the month of September alone in Gauteng.
These shocking statistics, which are also a breakthrough in combatting sexual offences–related crime in the country, were revealed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in a media statement on Saturday, 18 October 2025.
Police spokesperson Amanda Van Wyk commended the men and women in blue for their continuous efforts in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.
“The highest number of arrests were recorded in the Western Cape (536), followed by Gauteng (459) and KwaZulu-Natal (360).
In the same period, 46 sexual offenders were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 35 others received sentences of 20 years or more for various sexual offences,” she said.
In the most recent case, KZN police apprehended a 36-year-old suspect in KwaDukuza earlier this month. The suspect is allegedly involved in a series of rape and robbery cases reported between 2013 and 2016 in KwaDukuza, Mandeni, and Tongaat.
In Gauteng, a 34-year-old man was sentenced to three life terms for multiple charges of rape, sexual assault, and exposing minors to pornographic material. The Pretoria North Magistrates Court also found him guilty of repeatedly sexually abusing his nephew and niece.
Whereas in the Northern Cape, a 43-year-old man, Johannes Mouton, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, 38-year-old Sanna Basson, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a domestic violence incident on 22 November 2024.
Van Wyk described these as notable arrests, citing that each arrest and each conviction marks a step closer to a safer South Africa for all.
