Outrage has erupted after a video circulated widely on social media showing young children openly consuming alcohol in the presence of adults, raising serious concerns about child protection and neglect.
The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development has launched an investigation into the incident.
Freely drinking alcohol
In the footage, children believed to be between six and 12 years old can be seen freely drinking alcohol while older adults look on.
One child is heard boasting that there is no reason they should not be drinking because it is Christmas.
Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and a serious threat to the health and wellbeing of children.
“The video highlights a disturbing trend that must be addressed with urgency. The safety and welfare of our children are paramount, and it is the responsibility of every adult to protect them from harmful influences,” Fanta said.
She warned that allowing children to consume alcohol undermines their development and exposes them to significant risks.
“Allowing children to drink alcohol exposes them to dangers such as addiction, long-term health complications and potential legal consequences. It is deeply troubling to see adults facilitating such behaviour, which normalises dangerous actions and sets a poor example,” she added.
Identify those involved
Fanta said the department’s immediate focus is to identify those involved, establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and put appropriate interventions in place to safeguard the affected children.
“We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for permitting or encouraging this behaviour are held accountable,” she said.
The MEC stressed that the incident is a stark reminder of adult responsibility, particularly during the festive season.
“Adults must model positive behaviour and create nurturing environments for our youth. Families and communities should be engaging children in healthy activities that promote wellbeing, education and respect, rather than exposing them to alcohol,” Fanta said.
