‘Only in Joburg’: Helen Zille directs traffic after lights go out

Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille has taken matters into her own hands by posing as a traffic officer on a road without functioning traffic lights.

The 74-year-old has criticised national and provincial government for ignoring service delivery after hosting the G20 Summit in Sandton last month.

In September, the Democratic Alliance announced Zille as their candidate to take over the reins of the city.

HELEN ZILLE POSES AS TRAFFIC OFFICER

In a video posted on her TikTok account, Helen Zille posed as a traffic officer at an intersection where robots had appeared to have stopped working.

The 74-year-old appeared to direct the traffic.

She captioned the clip: “Only in Joburg: where the G in G20 stands for Goodbye [to service delivery]”.

“G20 has left the chat, so have the traffic lights!”

In another clip, Helen Zille criticised large potholes in the road.

“Post-G20 Joburg be like: ‘We removed the potholes in the demo version only’”, she added.

“The real main characters have reclaimed the story”.

Helen later appealed to her followers to “ask me anything”, answering their questions about how she plans to tackle concerns like service delivery in townships,  the scourge of illegal immigrants and the deterioration of the CBD.

PLANS AS POSSIBLE JOBURG MAYOR

In various interviews, Helen Zille has outlined exactly what she plans to tackle if she were to be voted in as Johannesburg’s next mayor

Her priorities include pursuing the following:

  • Clean water, a reliable electricity supply, and regular waste removal
  • Reliable infrastructure, working roads, street lights, and traffic lights
  • An audit to root out corruption and curb unnecessary spending
  • Establish good governance with skilled and ethical public servants.
