The long-awaited Mushroom Farm Shopping Centre has officially opened in Waterfall, Johannesburg, marking a major milestone for the fast-growing Kyalami-Waterfall corridor.
Developed and owned by Century Property Developments, the R600 million retail hub spans 27 000 square metres and features over 50 curated retail, dining, and service offerings.
The centre sits on the corner of Allandale and President Roads, just minutes from the Mall of Africa.
Named after a historic working mushroom farm that once neighboured the original Waterval Farm, the new development has been designed as a social and lifestyle destination, anchored by a central community piazza.
Designed for a Growing Community
Strategically positioned to serve residents of Waterfall, Kyalami, Midrand, and Sunninghill, the centre offers 1 150 public parking bays, 96 taxi bays, 60 motorbike bays, and dedicated Uber and Checkers Sixty60 pick-up zones with Wi-Fi.
Major road upgrades to Allandale Road and the K73, completed in 2023, were coordinated with the centre’s construction to improve accessibility and traffic flow.
Designed by BAR Architects and built by Archstone Construction, the mall features striking Japanese cedar panelling reminiscent of a mushroom cap, complemented by natural light and open terraces overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Anchor Tenants and Retail Mix
The Checkers Hyper (9 000 sqm) and Dis-Chem (1 300 sqm) serve as the centre’s anchor tenants.
Fashion and lifestyle retailers include WW Edit, Mr Price, Pick n Pay Clothing, Miladys, Contempo, and Kingsmead Shoes.
Home and personal brands such as @Home, Dial-a-Bed, Pep Home, Volpes, PNA, Spec-Savers, Sorbet, and Vision Works round out the mix, alongside services like Levinger’s Dry Cleaning & Shoe Clinic.
Dining options are equally varied, with established names like Wimpy, Seattle Coffee, Pizza Baby, Tasty Gallos, and Yiko Asian Eatery, as well as the expansion of The Whippet, the popular Linden-based restaurant.
New arrivals including Bootleggers Coffee Company, Blu Bam Boo Fusion Kitchen, Butcher Boys Prime Steakhouse, and Luna Lusa are set to open soon.
Sustainability and Community Focus
The Mushroom Farm Shopping Centre incorporates a strong sustainability focus, featuring a 2.1 MVA solar plant to ensure uninterrupted trading during load shedding.
Additional green initiatives include borehole and rainwater harvesting systems, low-flow plumbing, indigenous landscaping, and an on-site recycling facility that diverts waste from landfill.
Construction began in September 2024 and was completed on schedule in October 2025, generating more than 2 100 jobs.
The project prioritised local labour and suppliers, with community artists contributing bespoke murals throughout the centre’s central walkway.
