New MyCiTi bus depots constructed in Cape Town

The City of Cape Town has completed two new MyCiTi bus depots between Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, marking another major step in South Africa’s largest metro-led public transport project.

Built at a cost of R430 million, the depots are located at the corner of Spine Road and Mew Way.

They will house the new bus fleet for the MyCiTi south-east route expansion, connecting Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, as well as the nearby communities with Claremont and Wynberg.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, joined by Councillor Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, inspected the completed depots on 23 October, describing the project as a milestone in Cape Town’s transport transformation.

“It is amazing to see the infrastructure rising before our eyes to bring safe, affordable and reliable public transport along new routes linking Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and communities across the metro-south east,” Mayor Hill-Lewis said.

“The expansion of the MyCiTi service comes at an overall investment of R10 billion – the biggest in metro-led public transport by any South African city.” he added.

The existing MyCiTi N2 Express, linking Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to the city centre, is already among Cape Town’s busiest routes. Officials expect the new corridor to dramatically improve mobility and economic access for residents in the south-east.

Each new depot spans 7.5 hectares and will initially accommodate 145 buses, expandable to 250 buses as the network grows.

The depots feature:

  • Fully equipped mechanical workshops
  • Refuelling and electric bus charging facilities (with underground capacity)
  • Automated bus-cleaning systems
  • Office space, driver rest areas, and ablution facilities

Hill-Lewis added that the project forms part of Cape Town’s R40 billion infrastructure investment over the next three years, with 75% of spending directed to lower-income communities.

“The MyCiTi service expansion is one of the pillars of Cape Town’s record infrastructure investments, which amounts to R40 bn over the next three years, with 75% directly benefitting lower-income households,” Mayor Hill-Lewis also said.
