Jonty Rhodes, who has settled in the beachy climes of south Goa in Western India, described the smog and pollution levels in Delhi as “hard to digest”.
During a brief transit through Delhi en route to Ranchi, Rhodes shared a post on social media saying:
‘Passing through Delhi…and as always, it’s hard to digest the low levels of air quality here. Am grateful to be living in a small fishing village in South Goa.’
The legendary fielder, who represented South Africa in 52 Tests and 245 ODIs from 1992 to 2003, joined the Central Gauteng Lions as a fielding consultant in May.
His other recent coaching roles include serving as a fielding coach for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, and as a mentor for the Pokhara Avengers in the Nepal Premier League.
Jonty Rhodes has long shared a deep connection with India, where he now lives with his wife and two kids.
He later replied to his own tweet with a photo of his kids playing soccer on the beach in Goa, alongside the caption:
‘This is what my “home” sunsets look like – and yes, those are my kids playing football! In Delhi they suggest staying indoors’
Rhodes’ remarks come at a time when Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) spiked into the “very poor” and early “severe” categories, with numerous monitoring stations reporting readings above 300 and even 400.
This has prompted widespread public protests and renewed scrutiny of the India government’s response to this growing health crisis.
