  • Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has declared an Mpox outbreak following the nation’s first confirmed case in Swakopmund, Erongo Region, on 18 October 2025.
  • The patient is stable and isolated, with authorities initiating contact tracing and suggesting the virus may be linked to cross-border travel within SADC.
  • The MoHSS is urging public calm and strict hygiene, mobilising resources to contain the outbreak and prevent transmission through direct contact.

Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has declared an Mpox outbreak following the confirmation of the nation’s first case in the Erongo Region on 18 October 2025.

The patient is in a stable condition and isolated at Swakopmund District Hospital. Health authorities believe the case may be linked to cross-border travel within the SADC region.

The declaration aligns with WHO protocols, which require an outbreak response even for a single confirmed case.

The MoHSS has immediately activated its surveillance system to trace contacts and monitor for additional cases, urging calm and public cooperation.

Mpox, which presents with fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a blister-like rash, is now actively reported in several African countries. Transmission is through direct contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids, secretions, or lesions.

The public is advised to practice strict hand hygiene and avoid direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials to help contain the spread.
