A listener shares that her 28-year-old daughter recently moved back home. This is not the first time it has happened, and she is beginning to feel that her daughter is spoiled and that she may be enabling this behaviour.
She explains that her daughter wants her old room back and is struggling to accept that it was given to her younger sister.
Reaching out to The Best T in the City with Tbose, Anonymous wants to know if there are any blind spots she might be overlooking.
“My daughter moved out a few years ago to live with her boyfriend. Things didn’t go well, and she would come home whenever they fought. This June, she came back permanently.
“When she first left, her younger sister moved into her room instead of sharing a bed with me. Since coming back, they’ve been sharing the room, but now my eldest keeps hinting that she wants her room back because she wants to renovate it. She’s 28, and my first instinct was to tell her to go find her own place, but I held my tongue.
“I explained that she can’t come and go as she pleases and still expect to reclaim her old space. The tension in the house has been heavy since her return, and it’s affecting my youngest, who’s now started rebelling. My mother, who lives alone, has even offered to take my eldest in.
“I can’t help but feel like we’re enabling her. As parents, we want to give our children comfort, but we also need to protect the peace of the home – especially when other children are affected. I feel like I failed in teaching her accountability and independence. Is it too late to instill? Should I take my Mom’s offer? What else can I do to make a responsible woman?”
