Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop over Mpumalanga as unstable weather spreads across the northeastern interior.
Mpho Rasimphi, the forecaster, highlighted the concern.
“Severe thunderstorms are expected over Mpumalanga, with about a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers,” he said.
These storms may bring heavy rain, lightning and strong gusty winds, increasing the risk of localised flooding and damage to infrastructure.
Warm conditions add to instability in Mpumalanga
Before storms break out, temperatures across Mpumalanga will remain warm. Mbombela is expected to reach around 26°C, while Middelburg may peak at 29°C.
“It is still going to be a warm day, especially over the interior, before thunderstorms develop later,” Rasimphi explained.
The combination of heat and moisture creates ideal conditions for storm development, particularly during the late afternoon and evening.
Residents urged to remain vigilant
While overnight temperatures will cool to around 16°C, weather risks will not disappear. Storms may persist into the evening hours in some areas.
Rasimphi urged residents to stay cautious.
“People must be careful, especially during thunderstorm activity, as conditions can change very quickly,” he said.
Communities are advised to avoid flooded roads, secure loose items and remain indoors during lightning activity.
