Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng earned his first man-of-the-match performance of the season against Durban City on Saturday.
The Buccaneers edged out the Durban-based outfit 2-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The 21-year-old attacker has struggled for form this season and was in danger of missing out of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad. Last week, the Bucs star was named in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana’s AFCON preliminary squad.
Mofokeng assisted Evidence Makgopa’s opening goal in the 23rd minute and was again involved in Pirates‘ second goal. After the match, the Bafana playmaker credited his team for his performance at the Moses Mabhida.
“I’ve been doing it since training, I try to enjoy football, so yeah I think we just keep on going,” Mofokeng told SuperSport TV.
“His [Makgopa] positioning was perfect, so I saw him and then I decided to pass him because he was in a better position than mine.
“I think, when he scores, we also score as a team. I think he had a great touch and yeah for the early lead.”
Mofokeng inspires Pirates to win over Durban City
Pirates are top of the Betway Premiership standings following their 2-0 win over Durban City at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
The three points earned through the victory placed the Soweto Giants three points clear of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, with both teams having played 12 games this season.
The Buccaneers secured a crucial away win in what was their last Premiership fixture in 2025. The win will boost Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men ahead of the Carling Knockout Cup final against Marumo Gallants.
Mofokeng will likely be one of nine or 10 Pirates players to be included in Bafana’s final 23-man squad for AFCON next month.
