Crash Details and Rising Death Toll
A long-distance bus traveling from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape to Harare, Zimbabwe, veered off the road and overturned, killing 43 people and critically injuring many others.
The crash claimed the lives of seven children, including a 10-month-old girl.
Authorities believe most of the passengers were Zimbabwean nationals returning home. The provincial government said the process of identifying the victims will begin on Wednesday, 15 October.
Possible Causes of the bus crash
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said overloading and speeding may have contributed to the bus crash. She stressed the importance of cross-border cooperation in managing the aftermath of the tragedy.
“We will be working, as the South African government, closely with our neighbours and assisting our neighbours on any matters that would require assistance. We’ve been briefed that the recovery process took the whole night and many of the victims had actually been thrown out of the bus as it went down the embankment and were found to be underneath the bus when they were removing it,” said Creecy.
Authorities from the three countries involved are coordinating efforts to recover and identify the victims.
Medical teams are treating the 49 survivors, six of whom are in critical condition, while also addressing the emotional trauma of those affected.
