‘Minister of tin fish’: Tito Mboweni remembered on first anniversary

South Africans have recalled fond memories of the late Tito Mboweni on the first anniversary of his death. 

The former minister of finance was known for his love of tinned pilchards, his frumpy fashion sense, as well as his education and vast knowledge.

Mboweni died on 12 October 2024 after a short illness. He reportedly leaves behind four children he fathered with three women.

TITO MBOWENI REMEMBERED ON FIRST ANNIVERSARY

On the X app, South Africans have been posting their fond memories of Tito Mboweni on the first anniversary of his death.

User @sheisMokgadi posted: “Continue resting in peace, the Duke of the Duchy of Makgobaskloof. Today marks a year since your passing”.

Another, @tsukirametse_, posted: “Miss your drowning full chicken content.”

Others posted images of food dishes made in memory of the quirky culinary concoctions created by the man dubbed the “Minister of tin fish.”

Tito Mboweni’s son Sello, also paid tribute to the former minister and Reserve Bank governor.

On his Instagram, the aspiring rapper posted a picture of himself with his dad.

“Still feels like yesterday”, he captioned the post.

Earlier this year, Sello remembered his father on his first birthday since his death.

“You’ll forever be my Lucky Star”, he shared.

CAUSE OF DEATH

According to his brother, Alto, Tito Mboweni died in a hospital in Johannesburg a year ago, surrounded by his loved ones.

The family – who merely claimed the former minister suffered a “short illness”– did not disclose his cause of death.

Mboweni last tweeted on 1 October 2024. In the months before his death, he spent time travelling to countries like Ghana, Rwanda, and Malaysia.

His death anniversary coincides with the burial of former minister and South African Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa.
