Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave, will appear before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday at 2pm to answer questions about his role in disbanding the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
The commission confirmed his scheduled testimony in a statement on Monday.
Mchunu faces serious claims that he aligned himself with criminal networks and used his political influence to protect people under investigation.
Order to Disband the PKTT
Several witnesses, including National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, told the inquiry that senior political figures interfered in key investigations.
Mkhwanazi told the media on 6 July that Mchunu instructed him to shut down the PKTT and the organised-crime unit in the province.
In December 2024, Mchunu sent a formal letter to Masemola ordering the immediate disbandment of the task team.
Mchunu denies wrongdoing
The commission is investigating whether senior government and police officials manipulated policing processes for political or personal gain.
It has heard weeks of testimony alleging obstruction, intimidation and the shielding of criminal actors.
Mchunu has denied all wrongdoing through his legal team.
He also rejected the allegations during his appearance before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee last month.
