The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has concluded the marking of the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, despite encountering several challenges during the process.
According to reports from provinces, the marking was carried out efficiently and in strict compliance with established quality assurance protocols.
DBE spokesperson Terrence Khala commended markers for upholding the integrity of the examination system.
“Markers are the ultimate custodians of this high-stakes national assessment. Their unwavering commitment to accuracy, ethical conduct, and professional integrity has once again reinforced the credibility and reliability of the NSC examination system,” Khala said.
The completion of marking comes days after the department confirmed a breach involving some examination papers.
The irregularity was detected when markers identified six scripts with similar answers, triggering an investigation. It was later established that the leaked papers originated from an employee at the department’s head office.
Khala also expressed the department’s gratitude to the marking team at Pholela Special School in KwaZulu-Natal, who continued working under difficult conditions.
“Despite a severe hailstorm that caused significant damage to their vehicles, these markers persevered and completed their duties with exceptional resolve. Their conduct reflects the highest ideals of the teaching profession, discipline, resilience and an unwavering sense of national service,” he said.
The 2025 matric results are scheduled to be released on 12 January 2025, pending any changes, as confirmed by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube.
