National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola says police will maintain a strong presence in Reiger Park, Boksburg, to stabilise the area and arrest suspects linked to the deadly weekend drive-by shooting.
Gunmen killed six people and wounded three others on Saturday night along Williams Road.
Addressing residents on Sunday, Masemola said police would not allow violent attacks to continue.
“We heard what happened yesterday, and it cannot continue,” he said.
Masemola Promise Firm Action
Masemola met local councillors, community leaders, and pastors on Sunday. He said they agreed on immediate steps to restore calm and strengthen policing.
Masemola confirmed that the specialised police team already deployed in Reiger Park will remain in the area to maintain stability.
He said additional detectives will be assigned to investigate all criminal cases in the community.
“I will bring in another investigation team to work with you so we can arrest these individuals causing havoc,” he said.
Masemola urged parents to take a stronger role in guiding their children and called on residents to work with police to identify and arrest suspects.
Community Cooperation Praised
Masemola expressed confidence that police would catch the perpetrators.
“We are going to arrest these thugs. Many of you are already talking about who they are, and we will get them,” he said.
He also announced plans for another meeting this week with communities facing similar gang-related issues, along with other government departments.
Premier Lesufi Backs Masemola
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi joined Masemola during the visit and directed law enforcement to move swiftly.
“The mission is simple: hunt them and hunt them now,” Lesufi said.
Lesufi welcomed the deployment of additional police resources and said the province needed “massive support” to tackle rising violence.
Lesufi pledged immediate government support for the families of the deceased and said officials would work with community leaders to assess their needs and protect them from intimidation.
“We must support those families. They need us now,” he said.
