Maria Louw wins first round of new exciting sevens rugby tournament

Maria Louw came out tops in the first round of the inaugural Spring seven-a-side high school rugby series that kicked off on Friday last week at the Luvuyo Lerumo sports
fields.

The schools participating in this series run by the Phulutho Activities, NPO are Maria Louw, John Noah, Kwa Komani, Luvuyo Lerumo and Hexagon. Each team played three games, with the day’s winner determined by its total points haul at the end of the series.

Points classification is as follows: first place (22 points), second (19), third (17), fourth (15) and fifth (13).

The organisers intend to play two more rounds today and next Friday and the overall winner will be decided at the conclusion of the series. That winner will walk away with a trophy and gold medals and the runners-up will receive silver medals.

Maria Louw came up on top after beating John Noah 14-0, Kwa Komani 12-0 and Luvuyo Lerumo 14-5 to grab top spot to earn a maximum of 12 points.

The rules of the series are as follows, four points for a win and there are no bonus points awarded. Second place went to Luvuyo Lerumo with eight points, and third spot went to Kwa Komani who were on four points, ahead of fourth-placed Hexagon who are also on four points, but played one more game. The team that picked up the wooden spoon for the day was John Noah, who were without a win.

The points standings ahead of the second round of the competition, Maria Louw on 22
points, second is Lerumo (19), third Kwa Komani (17) and in fourth spot is Hexagon (15), and last place belongs to John Noah (13).

The next round in the series will be hosted again by Lerumo. Kickoff is at 2pm today and the final round will be hosted by John Noah High at Mlungisi Stadium next
Friday afternoon.

The tournament, introduced to keep pupils active on the sports field after the closing of the rugby season last month, is proving to be a successful concept.

The August 20 ending of the PH Splash High School rugby league season was ideal for grade 12s, who were due to write trial exams, but not all players are necessarily in matric. Phulutho Activities therefore came up with a new concept to keep the players busy.
