A significant transformation is underway at Somerset Mall in Somerset West, with the first phase of a major redevelopment set to open to the public on 20 November 2025.
The mall’s owners, JSE-listed Hyprop, announced the extensive upgrade as part of a long-term strategy to reinforce the mall’s position as the premier retail destination in the Helderberg region.
Over 5 000sqm of New Retail Space
Phase one of the redevelopment adds over 5 000 square metres of new retail space and introduces 26 new stores, bolstering the mall’s already dominant presence at the intersection of the N2 and R44 highways.
This marks the most significant investment in Somerset Mall’s recent history and is expected to increase foot traffic, tenant turnover, and regional investment.
Several high-profile brands will debut as part of the expansion, including:
- Safari Collection, launching its first South African store
- Napapijri, opening its first Western Cape location
- Skechers, Anta, Lego, Bella Luna, New Balance, Burnt, Curve Gear, Nicci Boutique, and JD Sports
The expansion also includes beloved local brands such as Bootlegger, Colourbox, and Old School.
Economic Boost for the Helderberg
Hyprop confirmed that over 12 000 jobs have been created during construction, including contractors, subcontractors, and consultants. Once operational, the new retail space is expected to sustain an additional 400 jobs.
“It’s not just about growth in square metres. We view this as a way to contribute meaningfully to local economic development,” said Nicholas Oliphant, General Manager at Somerset Mall.
“This project is centred around job creation, commercial inclusion and long-term sustainability.”
Enhancing the Shopper Experience
While external construction has been confined to the rear of the building to minimise disruption, the mall has maintained steady foot traffic throughout the upgrade.
Internal improvements across existing areas are also in progress, including:
- New floor tiling
- Upgraded bathrooms
- Installation of a Rubicon Supercharger Charge Station for electric vehicles
Phase Two on the Horizon
The redevelopment will continue with phase two launching in July 2026.
This phase will feature a Freedom Interactive Park – a new entertainment concept combining technology, recreation, and social connectivity in a high-traffic zone.
“We’re not reinventing Somerset Mall; we are refining it,” said Wayne Abegglen, Portfolio Executive for the Western Cape at Hyprop.
“We are enhancing the experience, broadening our offering, and ensuring that what we build now will still feel right ten years from now.”
Somerset Mall currently spans 70 000sqm and attracts over 10 million visitors annually.
With the redevelopment underway, it aims to remain the retail heartbeat of the Helderberg region – now with more to offer than ever before.
