Things got awkward fast on this week’s MAFS UK when the cast played snog, marry, avoid during their day trips. Julia-Ruth surprised everyone by choosing to “marry” Steven, who’s already matched with Nelly.
Naturally, people were left confused, given Julia-Ruth’s earlier argument with Steven. But speaking to Cosmopolitan UK, the 29-year-old dancer explained the moment wasn’t that deep, and that she and Steven actually had a solid friendship off-camera.

“The only reason I said that is because at this point Divarni and I had had so many arguments,” she said. “Out of everyone, the person I was getting on with the most and having the most laughs with was Steven, it was just for fun.”
She added that there was some off-screen context missing: “It wasn’t shown, but our couples, Nelly and Steven, Divarni and I, we just got on the most. Everyone kept telling me to say his name, so I did.”
It’s a slightly unexpected turn considering the pair’s earlier clash, when Julia-Ruth called Steven out for bragging about his sexual history while Nelly was recovering from a broken rib at home. The night ended with Steven storming off and shouting at the group, while Julia-Ruth’s husband Divarni stayed silent despite her asking for support.

Outside the experiment, Steven’s ex-partner and mother of his children, Chloe, has since spoken out about his portrayal on the show.
“I don’t condone outbursts or any of that kind of behaviour,” she said, “but I do think it’s been heavily edited to look a certain way.”
So while Julia-Ruth’s “marry” choice might have raised eyebrows, it sounds like it was less of a romantic reveal and more of a reflection of who she could actually laugh with when the cameras weren’t rolling.
