Listed: All the horrendous items police found when they searched the house of Ed Gein

When police finally searched the house of killer Ed Gein, they were greeted by the most horrendous items a person could imagine. Warning ahead for graphic content, or if you were just about to settle into your dinner.

During a particularly creepy episode of The Ed Gein Story on Netflix, we saw filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock talking about making Psycho. He took young actor Anthony Perkins to a mockup set he’d built for the film, based on the home of Ed Gein. There, he showed the actor a box full of horrific items. You probably remember what the most gruesome one was.

So now, many of us might be – tentatively – wondering if this was the case in real life. It turns out, it very much was. Police were met with what can only be described as a real life house of horrors when they arrested Gein and searched his house.

All the items that were found in the house belonging to Ed Gein

When police searched the home, they found the body of Bernice Worden, one of Gein’s victims, hung upside down by her legs with a crossbar at her ankles and ropes at her wrists. She was found in a shed on the grounds. In the main house that belonged to Ed Gein, the notable items found were:

  • Whole human bones and fragments
  • A basket made of human skin
  • Several chairs made out of human skin
  • Human skulls mounted on bedposts
  • Female skulls, some with the tops sawn off
  • Bowls made from human skulls, just like the ones on the Netflix show
  • A corset made from a female torso
  • Leggings made from human leg skin
  • Masks made from the skin of female heads, similar to those recreated on the show
  • The face of Mary Hogan – Gein’s other victim – in a paper bag
  • Mary Hogan’s skull in a box
  • As well as her body in the shed, police Bernice Worden’s head in a sack
  • They also found Bernice Worden’s heart, in a plastic bag
  • Nine vulvae in a shoebox – yes, the Alfred Hitchcock scene didn’t make this up
  • A young girl’s dress and the vulvas of two females judged to have been about 15-years-old
  • A belt made from female human nipples
  • Four noses
  • A pair of lips on a window shade drawstring
  • A lampshade made from the skin of a human face
  • Fingernails from female fingers

I need some time to come to terms with all that.
