  • Panyaza Lesufi faces his first motion of no confidence since forming a minority government in Gauteng.
  • The DA is pushing the motion following Public Protector findings that amaPanyaza was unlawfully deployed.
  • Opposition parties are being lobbied for support as the DA seeks 41 votes to unseat the Premier.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is expected to face the biggest test of his career as he goes up against a motion of no confidence in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

This is Lesufi’s first time facing such a motion since the formation of his minority government in the province last year.

The motion, led by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng, stems from the Public Protector’s findings that Lesufi had formed an illegal policing structure, the Gauteng crime prevention wardens, better known as amaPanyaza.

Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka found that the deployment of the amaPanyaza was unlawful.

For the DA to succeed in removing Premier Panyaza Lesufi, it will require at least 41 votes in the 80-seat Legislature.

The DA has reportedly reached out to all political parties in Gauteng, including the EFF, BOSA, ActionSA, IFP, FF Plus and the ACDP, to assist in removing Lesufi from his chair.

Lesufi, who is also the ANC’s provincial chairperson, previously said he remains unconcerned by the DA’s announcement.

However, the DA is confident that a successful bid to remove him will restore hope to the residents of Gauteng.

DA Member of Parliament Solly Msimanga emphasised that the decision to table the motion was not taken overnight.

“The motion comes after years of frustration and outcry from the residents of Gauteng who feel the province is being run into the ground and are demanding intervention to avoid its total collapse.”
