  • Lesufi condemned the Saulsville mass shooting that killed 11 people, including minors, saying illegal liquor outlets have become hotspots for crime.
  • He vowed intensified operations to ensure compliance in both legal and illegal alcohol establishments.
  • Law enforcement is pursuing strong leads as the motive remains unknown, while Lesufi also denounced the killing of Witness D, calling it an attack on justice.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says illegal liquor outlets in the province have become havens for criminal activities and pose serious risks to public safety.

This follows a mass shooting that claimed 11 lives, including those of minors, and left 14 others injured. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Saulsville hostel/shebeen in Pretoria West.

“We strongly condemn the lawlessness that thrives in such spaces. Working with law enforcement, we will intensify operations targeting both legal and illegal alcohol establishments to ensure full compliance with the law,” he said.

Lesufi described the mass murder that happened in Saulsville hostel as heartbreaking and unacceptable acts of criminality that have no place in the province.

“We are distressed by the loss of innocent lives, including young children, in this senseless act of violence. Our hearts go out to the families who are grieving today. As the Gauteng Provincial Government, we will not allow our communities to live in fear,” said Premier Lesufi.

Law enforcement authorities, supported by specialised units, are currently following strong leads and working around the clock to track down the suspects responsible for the attack. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this stage.

Lesufi further slammed the brutal killing of Marius Van Der Merwe, Witness D who testified about the alleged rot within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department at the Madlanga Commission. The Premier says any attempt to obstruct or interfere with justice will be met with zero tolerance.
