Latest January 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants bring New Year relief

The outlook for January 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants has taken an unexpected turn for the better. Following December’s social welfare disbursements in the first week of the month, recipients face a torturous five-week wait over the festive season. This is because the first Tuesday of January only falls in the second week of the New Year.

Plus, there was uncertainty over January 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants due to forecasted Department of Social Development budget cuts. Currently, the DSD’s budget for all social development sits at R285 billion. In the New Year, this figure falls by R14 billion, to R271 billion. And again in 2027 by R11 billion, to R260 billion. Fortunately, contrary to this trend, money dedicated to social welfare is actually increasing …

As a result, the South African Social Security Agency briefed parliament’s portfolio committee on social development just before the year-end shutdown. And its update on the future of January 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants and beyond was largely positive. While the social welfare budget decreases, the DSD’s broader budget – which includes SASSA social grants and other development initiatives – jumps from R422 billion to R452 billion over two years, to 2027.

Better still, parliament heard that a tough year for the agency has seen it fix major vulnerabilities in its grant system. SASSA authorities say as much as R340 million in savings stems from strengthened biometric verification checks and grant reviews. As we shall now explain …

So, while more of you may have your January 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants under review, it is for the greater good. In 2025, the National Treasury introduced stricter conditions for awarding SASSA grants, as well as more frequent interventions to close security gaps. The agency can now monitor people’s income in real time using bank records, cross referenced with government databases.

Better still, SASSA executive manager for operations, Brenton van Vrede, explained to parliament where the grant savings were made this year. In the just the first half of 2025, SASSA initiated more than 260 000 reviews. Just over 200 000 of these were completed. With the remaining 60 000 still outstanding. Nevertheless, roughly 35 000 grants were suspended or lapsed as a result.

Interestingly, these were not related to January 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants but mainly Child Support Grant and Disability recipients. From these reviews alone, SASSA expects to save R28 million a month, extrapolated to R340 million over a full year, with more than 500 000 reviews lodged. Moreover, some 8 600 Old Age and Disability Grants were reduced in value after income reviews.

Therefore, here’s a reminder on what you need to pass the all-important asset and means test from the agency:

  • Your income must be less than R107 800 (single) or R215 760 (married) per annum.
  • This is R8 983 (single) or R17 980 (married) per month.
  • And your cumulative assets (property) cannot be more than R1 524 600 (single) or R3 049 200 (married).

Make sure you bring the following documents (original and copies) when you apply for January 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants:
