There is set to be a new campus that is part of Lancaster University opening in Southern Indian state Bengaluru.
The announcement comes following a UK delegation consisting of 125 CEO’s, entrepreneurs, and leaders from the university and cultural sectors.
The decision has come in order to further Lancaster Univeristy’s international standing and its reputation of delivering high quality transnational education.
The plan was announced during Keir Starmer’s trade mission that took place in Mumbai, India.
This provides an opportunity to get a UK degree, but study in India, which is great for students who may not want to relocate far and stay closer to home if they live in that region.
A ‘Letter of Intent’ issued at a ceremony in India means Lancaster will start working with local partners in the Bengaluru region. They will develop programmes to study and research in the city, widening opportunities in that area such as sharing knowledge, talent and developing research globally. This also provides opportunities for the university to partner with local Indian businesses, strengthening both the UK and Indian economy.
Lancaster University, a top 10 UK university, with Gold teaching status, already has a powerful and renowned international presence. Consisting of partnerships in Ghana, Germany, China, Malaysia and Indonesia. The university promotes the deliverance of high-quality education to an international realm, in line with its commitment to equality and excellence.
The introduction of a campus in India allows for the development of the international academic community and reinforces Lancaster Universities aim, giving students the chance to study and strive to their fullest potential with the range of opportunities that will occur.
India also has partnerships with universities including York, Aberdeen, Bristol, Liverpool, Queen’s Belfast, Surrey and Coventry and have plans to open more campuses by 2026, with the aim of having 70 million places by 2035.
The degrees being introduced first include accounting and finance, management, computer science and data science, with more being set up as the campus develops. There are also talks of postgraduate courses being available in the future.
Pro Vice Chancellor of Lancaster University, Professor Simon Guy said by opening a campus in the southern Indian state, which is seen as a hub for technology and education, Lancaster University will “partner with Indian businesses, the local industries and local universities to collectively spark growth and generate opportunity.”
Keir Starmer told the BBC: “our great British universities are admired globally for their teaching excellence, high quality education and commitment to innovation. I am delighted that more Indian students will be able to benefit from world class British education…strengthening the ties between our two countries, while pumping millions back into our economy.”
