Kruger National Park launches relief fund

The Kruger National Park has launched a relief fund to rebuild damaged infrastructure following extensive damage caused by heavy rainfall in parts of the park.

The announcement was made by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Willie Aucamp after he conducted an aerial assessment of the affected areas to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Independent Oversight of Fund

Aucamp confirmed that the relief fund will be managed by an independent auditor, ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of donations.

He also appealed to corporate entities to contribute towards the recovery effort, saying public and private sector support would be crucial in restoring park infrastructure.

Evacuations Praised

The minister commended park management for their swift response to the severe weather conditions, particularly the safe evacuation of guests and staff from affected areas.

“No lives were lost,” Aucamp said, praising the coordination and effectiveness of emergency measures implemented during the flooding.

Recovery Efforts Underway

Assessment teams continue to evaluate the full scope of the damage, which includes roads, bridges and tourism facilities within the park.

Further details regarding recovery timelines and restoration plans are expected to be communicated in due course.
