Britain’s King Charles has taken a decision to start the process of stripping his brother, Prince Andrew, of his royal titles. He has also evicted Andrew from the Royal Estate in Windsor, England.
This comes a few weeks after Prince Andrew announced that he will no longer be using his royal titles and honours amid renewed scrutiny over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein.
Buckingham Palace has reportedly described the move as a necessary measure. Andrew has faced 15 years of on-and-off controversy over his friendship with Epstein, which reached new intensity after the release of a posthumous memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who alleged that Andrew had sexually assaulted her as a teenager, allegations Andrew has repeatedly denied.
Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims, died by suicide in April at the age of 41.
In a statement released to the media, Buckingham Palace noted that Andrew would be forced out of his residence and would now take the family name.
“Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation,” the statement read.
“These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.”
