  • Controversial businessman Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe was granted R400,000 bail by the Gauteng High Court after a successful appeal, overturning a magistrate’s refusal.
  • Judge Brad Wanless ruled the state’s opposition lacked “real evidence” and set aside the lower court’s decision, allowing for his release.
  • Molefe is facing multiple murder charges, including the 2022 killings of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, as well as separate charges for other 2022-2024 murders.

Controversial businessman Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe has been granted R400,000 bail by the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg following a successful appeal against an earlier refusal by the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. Molefe, who is facing multiple murder charges, will now be released from custody.

On Friday, Judge Brad Wanless handed down the decision, setting aside the Magistrate’s Court ruling from 20 August that had denied Molefe bail.

Judge Wanless concluded that the state’s opposition to the appeal was not “based on any real evidence.”

The judge stated that despite the seriousness of the alleged offences, there was “no objective evidence” to show that granting bail would violate the Criminal Procedure Act, arguing the lower court had “misdirected itself” in its initial decision.

Molefe was arrested on 22 July for the 2022 murders of popular musician and club owner DJ Sumbody (Oupa Sefoka) and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, in Woodmead, Gauteng.

This latest arrest came while Molefe was already out on R100,000 bail, which had been granted by the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, overturning a prior magistrate’s court denial. That initial release related to his December 2024 arrest for the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart, who was reportedly gunned down in April 2024 after being mistaken for someone else.

Molefe also faces additional charges relating to the killings of Hector Buthelezi (known as DJ Vintos) and Don Tindleni, who were fatally shot in separate incidents in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

He and his three co-accused—former police detective Michael Pule Tau, and alleged hitmen Musa Kekana and Tiego Floyd Mabusela—are jointly charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of illegal ammunition.
