  • Suspended EMPD officer Julius Mkhwanazi has requested for more time before testifying at the Madlanga Commission.
  • He faces allegations of corruption, ties to alleged underworld figure Cat Matlala, and links to several serious crimes.
  • The commission expects him to appear next week following an agreement with his legal team.

Corruption-accused Julius Mkhwanazi from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has asked for more time to prepare before appearing before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

It has emerged that Mkhwanazi, who has been dubbed the blue lights blesser, was scheduled to give his testimony on Thursday, 27 November 2025.

The suspended EMPD officer has been accused of pulling the strings for alleged underworld kingpin Vusimuzi Cat Matlala and irregularly appointing 50 people in the department.

He has also been linked to several crimes, including alleged murder, copper theft, extortion, robberies, and covering up a murder case that happened in Brakpan.

“There has been engagement with Mr Mkhwanazi’s legal representatives, and there is now an agreement that he will appear before the commission next week,” said the Commission’s spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels.

Established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July, the Madlanga Commission is investigating allegations of political interference and corruption within the country’s justice system.
