‘Joking’ Kaizer Chiefs players upset the coaches

Kaizer Chiefs’ season has been built on grinding out results, but the lack of goals and focus is testing patience on the bench.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys have played nine matches this season, seven in the Betway Premiership and two in the CAF Confederation Cup. Alarmingly, they have scored only eight times.

Given this return, interim coach Ben Khalil Youssef has confirmed that training at Naturena is focused relentlessly on improving both the technical and mental application in front of goal.

KAIZER CHIEFS’ SCORING PROBLEMS OUTLINED

Amakhosi managed a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch and three scrappy 1-0 victories against Polokwane City, Richards Bay and Golden Arrows.

They were held to a goalless draw by Mamelodi Sundowns, lost 3-1 to Sekhukhune United, and shared the spoils 1-1 with Marumo Gallants. In Africa, the Soweto giants edged Kabuscorp 1-0 at home but fell 1-0 in the away leg.

That poor goal return has left the Chiefs coaches unimpressed with how their players handle themselves in games.

One moment in particular drew anger from the bench. “Even against Polokwane City, it was a bit frustrating when the players started to joke in the game, and we are angry with them,” the coach admitted, signalling a lack of focus in crucial moments.

One of the club’s strikers, Wandile Duba, openly admitted the same issue.

Reflecting on last season, Kaizer Chiefs managed just 25 goals in 28 Betway Premiership games, a clear reason they ended the campaign in ninth place.

AMAZULU FC IN THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP

Meanwhile, a packed week is awaiting. Amakhosi welcome Arthur Zwane’s AmaZulu FC to the FNB Stadium on Wednesday at 19:30. Four days later, it’s Carling Knockout time against Stellenbosch FC on Sunday at the DHL Stadium at 15:00.
