ITV has confirmed Midsomer Murders will return for a 26th series – extending the life of the long-running crime drama that first hit screens in 1997.
The new four-part season will push the show’s total to 148 episodes and make DCI Barnaby “the most hard-working TV detective.”

Neil Dudgeon will once again star as DCI John Barnaby, the role he took over in 2011 from original lead John Nettles, who played cousin Tom Barnaby.
Returning to Midsomer Murders alongside him are Nick Hendrix (The Crown) as DS Jamie Winter, Annette Badland (Ted Lasso) as Dr Fleur Perkins, and Fiona Dolman as Sarah Barnaby.
“We’re thrilled to be returning to Midsomer with Barnaby and Winter.
“Series 26 promises to deliver four brilliant brand new cases for the legion of Midsomer Murders fans to enjoy,” said ITV drama commissioner Huw Kennair Jones.
Executive producer Michele Buck added: “We are so pleased to be able to bring viewers more tales from the fascinating world of Midsomer Murders with this series 26 commission.”
The 25th series wrapped filming over the summer in the Home Counties, but hasn’t aired yet.
You also can’t watch Midsomer Murders Season 24 on UK streaming services as it hasn’t aired in the UK, and is only available to stream in the US on services like Acorn TV and Amazon, leaving many UK fans frustrated.
Production on the 26th set to begin next year.
Fans can however look forward to seeing the franchise on stage.
A Midsomer Murders theatre production, starring original cast member Daniel Casey as Tom Barnaby begins its nationwide run this month.
The ITV favourite series has been on air since its pilot episode in 1997, with many famous faces joining at the start of their careers.
Celebrity cameos include Olivia Colman, Imelda Staunton, Hugh Bonneville, Henry Cavill and Holly Willoughby.
Last year the show was mocked for slapping a trigger warning on an episode of Midsomer Murders as it contains ‘witchcraft’.
The trigger alert was added to a 2004 instalment of the crime drama — where hundreds of characters have been killed over multiple series.
“But I’m surprised something like Midsomer Murders warrants a warning.”
Midsomer Murders airs on ITV and streams on ITVX.
