Indya Moore did not mince their words in an emotional video that took aim at their previous employer, Ryan Murphy. Now people are saying they’re onto something.
Queerness, or more specifically, a certain version of gayness, has been a major theme throughout Ryan Murphy’s solid body of work. Glee literally changed the world, and with shows such as American Horror Story, Pose, and 9-1-1, Ryan has continued to champion the LGBTQ+ community.
Though Ryan’s work has long been met with criticisms of offering a specific model of queerness – specifically the gay, white, dark-haired Matt-Bomer type – Pose centred transgender women of colour and the undeniable part they played in shaping modern culture.
Indya Moore featured in all three seasons as Angel Evangelista, a former s*x worker turned mainstream model. They’ve since gone on to pop up in Escape Room 2, Ponyboi, The Sandman, and Aquaman.
What did Indya Moore say about Ryan Murphy?
@pinknews Pose star Indya Moore has called out Ryan Murphy for being silent on trans attacks.Moore shared a video on her Instagram where she spoke about the attacks on transgender people in the USA. The actress spoke about how trans people are increasingly seen as ‘terr*rists’ and a threat while also being stripped of their rights. After thanking people who support trans people, Moore called out Murphy: “The fact that Ryan Murphy has been so silent? Like, we really p*ssed you off that much, Ryan? Like, Ryan Murphy, who upset you that much? Janet p*ssed you off that much?” Moore was referring to Janet Mock’s speech at the premiere for Pose’s final season, where they said: “How is it that you can do something like Pose during the Donald Trump administration, then it’s like… Poof… It’s gone. It’s like garbage. It’s like an embarrassment. Like, that’s how it feels.” Moore continued: “We need help. Trans people need help.” #indyamoore #ryanmurphy #trumpadministration #transrights #pose
You’d have to be living under a rock not to gauge the continued attacks against transgender people, but more specifically, trans women. From JK Rowling’s continued crashouts, to trans rights being used as a political football by just about every major party in the Western world, you’d think that trans people were an invention of modern times – not something that has been around for THOUSANDS of years.
In an emotional video posted to their Instagram, Indya – who uses they/them pronouns – said: “I have never thought that our belief that people should be free, or that we should be free from harm or violence, could ever be conceptualised as ‘threatening.’ I really, genuinely never knew.
“Y’all can’t make up your mind about how you want to view us. As weak and as a target to bully, or as a strong, bold threat. Ya’ll don’t know what to do.”
Though they did thank people who “given us jobs, given us work, allowing us to be able to speak out”, Indya called on those very same people to speak out on the continued persecution of the same group they once platformed.
They continued: “Like, the fact that Ryan Murphy has been this silent – like, we really pissed you off that much, Ryan? Like Ryan Murphy, who upset you that much? Janet pissed you off that much?”

Indya was seemingly referencing the viral moment in which Pose writer and producer Janet Mock used her awards acceptance speech to call for equal pay and the better treatment of trans people.
Indya went on to say: “I can’t tell you how much I have been reprimanded in my work for standing up against mistreatment, either for me or it happened to somebody else. And I’m trying to understand: How is it that you can do something like Pose during Donald Trump’s [first] administration, and then it’s like ‘poof, you’re gone’.
“It’s garbage. It’s an embarrassment. Ryan Murphy, we need you to do more. You need to address the racism, the violence, and the targeting of people on your productions, Ryan Murphy. You do need to make sure trans people are paid equally.”
People agreed with them
The video made for an incredibly difficult watch, with Indya getting emotional, but that was exactly the point. In the comments, people thanked them for their bravery, while agreeing that Ryan’s earlier platforming of trans people now seems disingenuous in light of his silence.
“And [they’re] right. He wants to take credit for bringing trans representation to light? And act as some gay god? WHERE ARE YOU, RIGHT NOW, RYAN?” one person wrote.
Trans icon Laverne Cox said: “Love you so much, my sister. This call to action, this call to love, this call for empathy, acknowledging each other’s humanity both intra-community and for those who proclaim allyship. I’ve been weeping just like this. Weeping. But not showing it. But I hear you. I feel you deeply. I’m right there too.”

“To my trans family. I love you. I see you. And my very existence is indebted to you and all of the sacrifices you make to live an authentic life. I stand with you, and thank you for all that you do,” said RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Shea Coulee.
“They love the dolls when it’s for profit but never for humanity,” another said.
Ryan Murphy has yet to respond, but then again, he’s proboably hard at work warping Ed Gein’s story into a thirst-inducing montage of his crimes for Netflix’s Monster season two.
