South Africans planning a trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) need to take note of a new travel requirement that came into effect this month.
According to Gulf News, UAE immigration authorities now require all visa applicants to submit a copy of their passport’s external cover page along with the standard documentation.
This applies to all nationalities who wish to gain entry into the UAE.
What is the passport cover page, and who does the new rule affect?
The external cover page is the very first page of your passport. It carries the country’s name, emblem, issuing authority, and other national markings.
This is different from the inside data page that displays your photo, name, and passport number.
The rule also applies to all travellers of all nationalities, including South Africans, and covers all types of entry permits and visas.
Whether you’re applying for a tourist visa, business visa, or residency-related entry permit, the cover page copy must now be uploaded.
Why the change?
UAE immigration officials say the update is designed to improve security checks, strengthen identity verification, and reduce errors in processing. By including the cover page in visa applications, authorities can quickly cross-check national details and reduce the risk of mismatched or fraudulent applications.
What South Africans should do
- When applying for a UAE visa online, make sure you scan or photograph both your personal data page and your passport cover page.
- Ensure the image is clear, well-lit, and free of glare or shadows.
- Double-check that your passport has at least six months’ validity from your date of entry into the UAE, as this remains a standard requirement.
- If you’re applying through a travel agency, confirm they are aware of the new rule and have included the cover page in your submission.
