Iconic alcoholic drink RETURNS to Tesco four years after it was discontinued

A BELOVED coffee liqueur that was discontinued four years ago is making a triumphant return to Tesco.

The iconic tipple was ditched by Bacardi after the brand revealed it wanted to focus on “ultra premium tequilas”.

Patrón XO Cafe is returning to Tesco shelves across the country

The death of Patrón XO Cafe was so devastating that fans even created a Change.org petition to get the drinks giant to reverse its decision.

But now, Tesco is stocking the Mexican Silver Tequila for £46 for 70cl.

The catch is that the bevvy is £16 more than it retailed four years ago, when it had a price tag of £30 for a 70cl bottle.

The handcrafted tequila is a dry, low-proof coffee liqueur that’s a mixture of Patrón Silver and coffee essence.

It contains 100% Weber Blue Agave – a large succulent commonly found in parts of Mexico.

One shopper wrote in Tesco’s review section: “Absolute perfection and a true delight for coffee lovers, smooth velvet and rich.”

The bottles are available in stores and online at Tesco.

Last year, liqueur lovers were delighted after Patrón XO returned to branches of The Alchemist across the country.

The bar chain has sites in cities including London, Birmingham, and Leeds.

In 2021, Bacardi chief operating officer Mauricio Vergara broke the news that it would no longer be produced.

Vergara told trade title The Grocer that the business wanted to focus on “growing and protecting production and supply of our core super and ultra-premium tequilas”.

He said the company would instead be dedicating resources to its Patrón Silver, Patrón Reposado, Patrón Añejo and other Patrón products.

The move was described as heartbreaking by customers on social media.

They highlighted how the drink is the first choice of shot when out with friends as “it is easier to throw down your throat than other spirits.”

On X, one described it as “the worst day of my life” and others joking about stocking up on the coffee tequila instead of petrol.

One user said: “Just found out that Cafe Patron is being discontinued, what a truly terrible Friday this just turned into.”

Other drinks making a comeback

In other drinks news, Coca-Cola is bringing back the Diet Cherry Coke today for the first time since 2018.

Meanwhile, a beloved 1990s alcopop made a return to shop shelves after 20 years this summer.

Last year, The Sun also revealed that Double Diamond was making a comeback.

Double Diamond was first brewed in 1876 as an Indian Pale Ale.

It was so popular that it was advertised in Piccadilly Circus and used the slogan “A Double Diamond works wonders.”

After selling more than 50million pints in a single year it was almost nationalised in the 1960s.

How to save money buying alcohol

Alcohol can be pricey if you’re planning a party or hosting an event but there are ways to cut costs.

It’s always important to drink responsibly, here, Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements share some tips on getting booze for the best price.

Stocking up can mean big savings on drinks, especially if you want to buy wine or fizz.

The big supermarkets regularly offer discounts of 25% when you buy six or more bottles of wine. The promotions typically run in the lead up to occasions such as Bank Holidays, Christmas and Easter.

If you know you are going to need booze later in the year, it can be worth acting when you see offers.

Before buying your preferred drink make sure you shop around to find the best price – you can use a comparison site such as pricerunner.com or trolley.co.uk.

Don’t forget that loyalty cards can unlock better savings so make sure you factor that in too.

If you like your plonk, wine clubs can also be a good way to save money and try new varieties. You’ll usually have to pay a membership fee in return for cheaper price so work out if you will be buying enough to make the one off cost worthwhile.
