This week, the whole internet has been hooked on the saga surrounding Kira Cousins. The 23-year-old Scottish girl has gone viral after she faked her pregnancy and birth with a reborn doll.
The story was first revealed when Kira’s cousin Naeve posted the entire saga, with receipts. For months, Kira had shared pregnancy updates – from bump photos to scan pictures. She was posting about hospital appointments, and supposed complications with the baby’s heart. Her friends threw her a baby shower, with one family member gifting her a £1,000 pushchair.
She then even faked the birth. After this her mum apparently became suspicious that the baby – that was actually a reborn doll – was silent. Even Kira’s partner Jamie was duped by it all.
Now, someone who makes reborn dolls for a living has spoken out about the saga. They have shared why someone might have done this, and has defended her job, and people who enjoy reborn dolls for what they actually are.

Jess Ellis, 29, started making and collecting the realistic dolls after a battle with PCOS left her struggling to conceive. The content creator has said they’re “beautiful” to look at, and claimed they release similar hormones to mums caring for newborn babies.
Whilst she does not condone what Kira Cousins is alleged to have done, Jess believes she must have suffered from some form of loss prior.
Jess said: “I absolutely cannot condone what she’s done. It’s really awful to do to your family, having said that, I wonder if she’s had some sort of mental breakdown or something. A mentally well person does not do that kind of thing. I’ve seen a lot of people talking about her online and I think she needs some help.”
Jess added she is now worried that Cousins’ alleged actions may now give people the wrong idea about reborn dolls. She said: “Most of the time people get a reborn because they like the dolls, but they are also used for some kind of grief and they can be very beneficial.
“I worry that when stories like this come out that it’s reinforcing that people who have reborn dolls are crazy and that we think they are real and that we’re trying to trick our family and friends and that’s not the case at all. I’ve seen people who have used them for grief but not pass them off as real, I’ve never seen that before.”

Kira previously spoke out about what happened. In a TikTok, she said: “While I’m not condoning any behaviour led by myself, I’d like to clear some things up. No one should be hating towards either family, and specifically not Jamie. None of my family knew, nor did Jamie’s.
“I had been keeping myself away from literally everyone, went into my own bubble and didn’t want anyone around me at all. My family sat me down and asked me what had happened earlier in my pregnancy which I will come out and address when I’m also ready to. Don’t for one min think either they let me away with any of this. THEY HAVEN’T.”
In a further post, she did speak out about how she was feeling at the time. Kira continued: “I don’t have a proper excuse. Yeah, I wasn’t in a good headspace but that doesn’t make what I did okay. I know this is gonna stick with me for a long time and that I’ve probably lost friends I’ll never get back. I’m trying to figure myself out and get help because this version of me isn’t someone I wanna be. I know I’ve ruined a lot of trust and that ‘sorry’ won’t fix everything, but it’s all I can say right now.”
