Award-winning artist Sho Madjozi has sparked conversation after discussing her approach to motherhood on Nandi Madida’s The Motherhood Network podcast.
Madjozi introduced the term “choice mom” to describe her deliberate decision to have a child outside of marriage or a relationship.
She emphasised that she chose the child, not a man, and is leveraging the privilege of independence to build her family on her own terms.
The artist drew a distinction between being a “choice mom” and a single mother, noting that her experience lacks the “grief” and “repair” often involved in recovery from a breakup with a child’s father.
She explained that her primary goal was to provide her child with emotional safety and stability, something she felt she lacked growing up.
Madjozi stressed the importance of community, stating her child is being raised in a village of women, highlighting that she is not parenting alone, but simply “differently.
Madjozi ended with a powerful message for women, acknowledging the difficulty many face in finding compatible partners in South Africa.
She encouraged women to recognise that the ability to have a child is not dependent on finding a man, offering an empowering reminder that they have the option and freedom to shape their own family lives.
