KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a manhunt for suspects after four people were found burnt to death inside two vehicles in the Umatata area of Inanda.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 15 November 2025.
FOUR BODIES FOUND IN TORCHED VEHICLES AT INANDA
SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police responded to reports of two burnt vehicles. Upon arrival, officers discovered one body burnt beyond recognition inside a Nissan NP200, while three additional bodies were found inside a Toyota Rumion, also burnt beyond recognition. Police also found three carcasses of cattle next to the NP200.
“The motive of the killings is unknown at this stage, however police suspect that the incident could be related to stock theft. The process to identify the victims is underway and a search for the suspects is ongoing,” Netshiunda said.
ALLEGED STOCK THEFT?
The attack unfolded in Inanda, an area that has repeatedly ranked among the country’s most dangerous policing precincts. For several years running, Inanda has appeared in the top three nationally for murder, attempted murder, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The region has also struggled with vigilante killings, violent disputes linked to livestock and land, and community tensions fuelled by limited policing resources and high unemployment.
Incidents involving suspected stock theft have previously triggered mob violence and retaliatory attacks in several rural and peri-urban parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Police have urged residents not to take the law into their own hands and to report suspected criminal activity through official channels.
KwaZulu-Natal police are appealing for information that may assist in identifying the victims or locating the perpetrators. Anyone with information is urged to contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
