He’s in your head! Bok supporters hijack Irish song about Rassie

Springbok supporters in Ireland belted out the infamous “Rassie” remix – a cheeky rendition of The Cranberries’ Zombie – during South Africa’s clash against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin over the weekend.

The Boks won the nail-biting match 24-13.

RASSIE VS  ZOMBIE AT AVIVA STADIUM

In a clip posted on TikTok, a stadium DJ teased the crowd – and the Springboks – by playing The Cranberries’ Zombie.

But instead of the original lyrics, the crowd, made up of many green-and-gold wearing supporters, belted out the “Rassie remix” instead.

On social media, South Africans laughed off the faux pas, claiming Rassie was “living rent-free in their heads”.

The anti-terrorism song was given a remake by South Africans at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Instead of the words “Zombie”, Boks supporters paid homage to coach Rassie Erasmus, claiming that the rugby genius’s strategic moves was the cause of his rivals’ stress.

WHERE REMIXED THE SONG?

Almost three decades after its release, Zombie was given a remix by Dylan James, a Springbok superfan who uses the popular X handle, Captain Springbok.

The die-hard fan – a South African living in London – attended the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, where he witnessed Ireland beat the Boks in the group stage round.

A few days after the loss, Captain Springboks predicted South Africa would win the World Cup, despite the devastating loss to their fierce rivals.

He later told a news reporter: “After we lost to Ireland, I couldnt get the Zombie song out of my head, so I changed the words to Rassie…This is for Rassie and the boys”.

The song was sung throughout the rest of the World Cup, and when South Africa lifted the trophy.

A few months after the World Cup, Afrikaans muso Rikus De Beer released a full-length song dedicated to Rassie.
