South African motorists could be in for some much-needed relief at the fuel pumps in early November, with petrol prices expected to drop by as much as 62 cents per litre and diesel by 34 cents.
This is based on the latest figures from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), which monitors daily fluctuations in fuel prices and tracks the country’s fuel pricing under-recoveries.
What’s Driving the Drop?
The projected fuel price decrease comes on the back of two major developments:
- A stronger rand – The South African currency has shown consistent improvement against the US dollar in recent weeks. Since oil is traded globally in dollars, a stronger rand reduces the cost of fuel imports.
- Falling oil prices – The price of Brent Crude oil has dipped below $62 a barrel, down from around $67, following the recent ceasefire in Gaza. The de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East –- a key oil-producing region – has helped calm fears of supply disruption, contributing to price stability.
Relief for Consumers and Businesses
For millions of South Africans, the potential price drop offers a glimmer of hope as the country continues to deal with the economic strain of load shedding, rising food prices, and inflation.
High transport costs have been a major driver of living expenses, with fuel price hikes triggering knock-on effects across the economy.
Lower fuel prices would benefit consumers, transport companies, and small businesses, many of whom have been forced to cut costs or raise prices due to skyrocketing operating expenses.
Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF):
FUEL | PRICE CHANGE |
Petrol 93 | decrease of 62 cents |
Petrol 95 | decrease of 58 cents |
Diesel 0.05% | decrease of 34 cents |
Diesel 0.005% | decrease of 33 cents |
Illuminating Paraffin | decrease of 16 cents |
If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – a decrease of 61 cents is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and a decrease of 58 cents for 95 users.
Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 33 and 34 cents per litre decrease.
Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to drop by 16 cents in price.

FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS:
1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices
2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products
