Here are 10 autumnal essentials every Exeter student needs

We have seen the last of sunny Exeter for now as we enter into mid-October, but not to worry – Exeter in autumn is just as iconic.

It’s time for hot drinks, scented candles (don’t tell your landlord), and cosy clothes. So, here are 10 autumnal essentials every Exeter student needs to help you thrive this autumn.

1. A gingerbread latte from The Tiny Tasting Room

This drink is the new pumpkin spiced latte – and I’d argue it’s even better. The best way to fully feel immersed in the cold autumn weather is with a gingerbread latte from The Tiny Tasting Room.

With a specials menu that changes with the seasons, they offer a variety of unique coffees throughout the year – my personal favourites are always the autumn selections.

2. A chunky scarf

The bigger, the better when it comes to chunky scarves. They are perfect for keeping you warm on your walk to campus, and can double up as a blanket to keep you warm in your lectures as well.

A colourful scarf also ties your outfit together and brings a pop of colour when the rest of your cool outfit is hidden behind a coat.

3. A pair of boots

Whether that’s a pair of brown, fluffy boots like Uggs that keep you cosy or a pair of black, leather boots like Doc Martins that keep your feet dry, boots are definitely the way to go this autumn.

4. A jumper for TP

Now, this is a real essential. It is tricky to stay past midnight on a good day in TP, but if you are cold it’s even harder. A good zip-up hoodie is perfect for keeping warm: It shows off your outfit underneath while keeping you comfortable as you wait for the club to start getting busy.

5. Gilmore Girls on the TV

Autumn is Gilmore Girls season. This is the perfect excuse to rewatch the show we all know and love. It’s time to cuddle up with a large mug of tea and remember why you prefer Logan over Jess.

6. An alarm clock

As the nights get longer and longer and the weather gets colder, it is getting increasingly harder to get out of bed in the morning.

Dark, frosty mornings make it too easy to hit snooze so you need an alarm clock that will get you out of bed and straight to those dreadful morning lectures.

7. A reusable coffee cup

The walk to morning lectures becomes instantly more bearable with a warm mug of tea or coffee in your hands.

8. An evening at the Firehouse

The Old Firehouse is one of the cosiest pubs in Exeter and a great spot for some delicious pizza to share with your friends. The live music and the Monday Pub Quiz are also great additions to an evening at the Firehouse. Make sure you get there early because a table is almost never guaranteed!

9. A dog walk

With apps like ‘Borrowmydoggy’ or with ESV Dog walking, you can volunteer to walk someone’s dog for the morning. This is the perfect boost of serotonin and a great way to spend time with your friends.

Wrapping up warm with hats and gloves and playing catch with your new furry friend is a lovely way to take your mind off academics for a bit.

10. M&S Bakery

M&S in itself is one of the essentials for “Exetah” life but the bakery is just perfect for the autumn season. With sweet treats such as a cinnamon bun or gingerbread and white chocolate cookies, who could resist? It is the perfect reward for a long day at university and pairs beautifully with a cup of chai tea.
