One boldly claimed: “It’s an honour to be here. It’s my first time seeing the president. Hello, Cupcake!”

The learner waved at the president, who later posed for pictures with the group.

WHY IS THE PRESIDENT CALLED CUPCAKE?

After the social media blunder, many South Africans referred to President Ramaphosa by his nickname, “cupcake”.

According to IOL, the term of endearment was given to the president in 2017, as seen in messages allegedly sent to him by multiple women amid allegations he was sleeping with and financing several young women.

In a leaked email, Ramaphosa – then running for the presidency – also allegedly used the term “cupcake” to describe one of the women.

Ramaphosa called on media publications to be fair and unbiased in their reporting.

In a sit-down interview with the Sunday Times, Ramaphosa admitted to having an affair with a woman from Limpopo.

He said, “I had a relationship with only one person, and it ended. I dealt with it with my wife. We now have a professional relationship.”
