- Gauteng authorities have activated disaster management structures as severe rains, thunderstorms and flooding intensify across the province.
- Residents are urged to follow official safety alerts as La Niña–driven weather conditions worsen.
- More rain and thunderstorms are expected through the weekend and into early next week.
Gauteng residents have been urged to remain vigilant as severe summer rains continue to intensify across the province.
Persistent downpours, powerful thunderstorms, and localised flooding fuelled by a developing La Niña pattern have created hazardous conditions and caused significant disruption across the province.
Theo Nkonki, spokesperson for the Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, said government disaster structures remain fully activated to respond to any weather-related threats.
“Residents are warned that safety risks are escalating, and strict adherence to official alerts is now essential to preventing injuries, fatalities and avoidable damage,” Nkonki stressed.
On Thursday night, the Gauteng Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) briefed the Local Government Turnaround Strategy weekly meeting on the province’s state of readiness.
The session reviewed early impacts, assessed municipal response capacity, and confirmed the activation of emergency protocols to safeguard communities as conditions worsen.
In weather forecasts, Johannesburg is expected to reach a high of around 19°C on Friday before dropping to about 13°C overnight, with thunderstorms contributing to a humid and unsettled afternoon.
Pretoria will be slightly warmer, peaking near 20°C with an overnight low of around 16°C.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Johannesburg faces a 30% chance of rain on Saturday, with temperatures rising to around 23°C.
A 70% chance of thunderstorms is forecast for Sunday afternoon, extending into Monday, while more rainfall is expected early next week as the rainy season continues into December.
