Heavy rainfall predicted for KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is expected to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms today and tomorrow, with the South African Weather Service warning of potential flooding and road disruptions.

The western parts of KwaZulu-Natal are likely to be the most brutal hit, with continuous rain and thunderstorms expected to persist into Thursday night. The SAWS warned that localised flooding of roads, settlements, and streams may occur in some areas.

Forecaster Mpho Rasimphi said the weather system responsible for the widespread rain is expected to persist for at least 48 hours.

“We anticipate heavy rainfall that may cause flooding in some areas, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions,” Rasimphi explained.

He added that residents should monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall periods.

Safety reminders for the heavy rainfall

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any blocked drainage systems or flooded roads to local disaster management teams.

“Please stay cautious and plan your movements carefully,” Rasimphi advised.

“Fast-flowing streams and slippery roads could make travel dangerous.”

Daytime temperatures across KwaZulu-Natal are expected to remain mild, while humidity levels are expected to rise due to persistent rainfall.

Looking ahead

According to the weather service, Friday is expected to bring drier conditions, with rainfall decreasing across much of the province. However, isolated showers may persist along coastal areas.
