As a former Disney Channel child, I’ve somewhat veered towards Team Selena in the ongoing beef between the criminally online fandoms – despite neither Selena nor Hailey wanting anything to do with the drama. But now I’m handing back my Selena Gomez card, because I simply didn’t know Hailey Bieber was THAT girl.
In the most recent episode of the In Your Dreams With Owen Thiele podcast, Hailey responded to internet rumours that she is secretly a trans woman.
“Why do you think that’s a diss?” she questioned, adding: “As if being trans is a diss or like – some of the most beautiful women in the world and men in the world are trans. And so I just don’t take that offensively at all.”
Hailey Bieber was widely applauded on Twitter for the no-nonsense response, with one person writing: “I’m sorry, Hailey, I wasn’t familiar with your game.”
“This is me, granting credit where it’s due. Fantastic take. 10/10. No notes,” another said, while a third added, “Master class in how to make me stan in 0.5 seconds.”
Someone else pointed out: “They want to insult her by calling her trans, and literally some of the most beautiful women in the fashion and the cinema industry are trans… Hailey clocked it, again.”

In 2025, when your favourite celebrities are signing up for projects connected to She Who Shall Not Be Named, it’s refreshing to see such a mainstream celebrity go to bat for a historically marginalised community. In fact, it makes me think of the original icon to do it: Lady Gaga.
In the earliest days of her career, back when she was wearing meat dresses and being an unapologetic freak, Lady Gaga weathered countless rumours about her being trans. She never directly responded to the rumours, stating she didn’t feel insulted by them, but every time she was directly questioned on it, her response was elegant and to the point.
The most famous instance came during an interview with Anderson Cooper, where she clapped back: “Maybe I do [have a penis]. Would it be so terrible? Why the hell am I going to waste my time and give a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don’t care, and neither do I.”
