Springbok hooker Johan Grobbelaar says he relishes the chance to build experience as South Africa prepare for their Test against France.
Speaking from Paris, Grobbelaar said squad rotation keeps competition strong and ensures that younger players gain valuable exposure at Test level.
“You must keep building your squad and giving young guys opportunities,” he said, supporting Felix Jones’s emphasis on player development.
HOOKER BOASTFUL ABOUT SPRINGBOKS’ UNMATCHED PLAYER-POOL
Grobbelaar said the system prevents a generational gap and ensures the Springboks maintain balance between seasoned internationals and rising prospects. He added that the approach motivates players to perform in training and match situations, knowing selection remains performance-driven and fair.
For Grobbelaar, the rotation system also creates fresh energy within the group, especially during a demanding international and club calendar. He said the physical demands of modern rugby require coaches to manage workloads carefully and rotate players to avoid unnecessary fatigue.
The hooker described his inclusion as an exciting opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the team’s success during the European tour.
“It’s great for me as a younger guy coming in and getting more caps,” Grobbelaar said with visible enthusiasm. He said each Test match brings different lessons, especially when surrounded by experienced teammates who guide newer players effectively.
Looking ahead to the France Test, Grobbelaar admitted it would be one of the biggest matches of his career so far.
“It’s a massive opportunity for me,” he said, adding that playing in Paris for the first time makes the moment even more special.

He also noted that the experience of competing against world-class opposition would sharpen his skills and understanding of international rugby demands.
Reflecting on the World Cup quarter-final between the same sides, Grobbelaar said the Springboks took valuable lessons from that intense contest.
He emphasised that maintaining composure under pressure and trusting the team’s systems remain key priorities for this weekend’s challenge, with the Springboks eager to deliver another disciplined performance.
