Great news for Durban beaches this December

The eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that ALL Durban beaches are open for swimming as of 1 December.

This marks a major milestone ahead of the festive season and signals a renewed confidence in coastal water quality across the city.

Durban’s coastline is officially back in full swing this December

The announcement follows months of phased reopenings, during which certain beaches, including Anstey’s Beach and Reunion, were temporarily closed due to water quality fluctuations.

With the latest round of testing completed, the municipality says every beach along the Durban coastline now meets the required safety standards for bathers.

Residents and tourists can enjoy the full stretch of Durban’s beaches between 06:00 and 18:30 daily, with surf-lifesaving teams stationed at major points to ensure visitor safety.

All public swimming pools also open

Alongside the full beach reopening, eThekwini has confirmed that 40 municipal swimming pools across the city remain open to the public. These include community pools in popular hubs such as KwaMashu, Umlazi, Durban North, Westville, and Chesterville.

Public pools operate from 06:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday, and 09:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and public holidays, offering additional options for families seeking safe places to cool off this summer.

The timing could not be better. With Durban preparing for peak summer tourism, the full reopening of all beaches is expected to provide a major boost to local businesses, hospitality establishments, and coastal attractions.

The municipality says it will continue monitoring water quality daily and will update residents should conditions change, but for now, Durban’s coastline is fully open, fully operational, and ready for the holiday rush.
